Protect Hassan Diab from further injustice

We call on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Canadian government to protect Dr. Hassan Diab from unjust prosecution and an unfair trial in France for a crime he did not commit.

In 2014, Hassan was wrongfully extradited from Canada to France. After spending more than three years in a French prison, French investigative judges found strong evidence that he was not in France at the time of the 1980 crime. He was released in 2018 and cleared of all allegations.

In a politically motivated appeal by French prosecutors, and despite no evidence against him, Hassan was ordered to stand trial in France; the date of the trial has been set for April 2023. This shocking disregard for facts raises fears that a show trial will lead to a wrongful conviction based on unreliable material and unsourced intelligence.

Disarm, Defund, Dismantle

Memorial Mass for Shireen Abu Akleh

When: July 10th, 10:30am

Mass in honour of Palestinian-American journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, killed in Jenin (West Bank) on May 11, 2022. Event will stream on St. Joseph’s Facebook page.

Kindly note that the mass will follow a regular format and, hence, no at-length tributes (speeches, homilies, etc.) for the beloved journalist are expected to take place. Attendees are nonetheless invited to keep Shireen’s memory close in mind and heart.

On July 31, the Workers Income Protection Benefit (WIPB) which provided Ontario workers with 3 temporary paid sick days is set to expire. The WIPB was already inadequate and far from what workers need.

As we brace for a possible seventh wave of COVID-19 in the fall, workers will once again be left with zero protections against illnesses.

They had set off for the bloody world slaughter-house young, strong, healthy. Their lives still lay ahead of them. Then only a few months, weeks, even days later, they were brought back to the infirmaries, half dead, broken.

Colombia: After Decades of Reaction, A Turn Left

For the first time ever, Colombia has chosen new leadership that is not conservative. Voters in the third-most populous nation in Latin America narrowly elected the former mayor of Bogotá, Gustavo Petro, in a runoff election against his conservative opponent Rodolfo Hernández, with 50.47 percent of the votes. Petro, who ran on a platform to tackle inequality, is a former rebel soldier who, at the age of 17 joined a now-defunct guerilla group called M-19 and was briefly imprisoned and tortured.

Ford’s Hallway Medicine: Declining Hospital Beds in Ontario

The massive cut in the number of hospital beds in Ontario in the 1990s is, by now, well known. Community and labour movement campaigns over the last fifteen years stopped the decline in the number of beds, but the push for cuts is relentless. Hospital beds per capita have continued to decline right up until the most recent data reported. Moreover, Ontario remains a low-capacity outlier – with far fewer beds per capita than other provinces.
