CALLS TO ACTION

Equal Rights for 1.7 million people

Because of migrant organizing, Prime Minister Trudeau has instructed the Minister of Immigration to create a regularization program (give Permanent Resident status to undocumented people). Parliament has also unanimously called for a plan to be tabled by September 8th 2022 to “allow workers of all skill levels permanent residency.” Life-changing rules that will open the door to citizenship for all migrants including undocumented people are on the horizon. But we must make sure that no one is left behind. Add your name to call for status for all.

#BetterMedicare: Virtual Care

When: August 25th, 7pm

It’s clear that virtual care is here to stay. How can we leverage its advantages, while staying cognisant of its limit, to prevent exacerbating inequities in access to care? At CDM, we’re continuing to ask these questions.

CDM Board Member Dr. Boluwaji Ogunyemi, one of co-authors of our recently-published “Position Paper on Virtual Care,” will be walking participants through CDM’s position.

Dr. Sheryl Spithoff will be joining us once again to talk about the implications for patient data privacy in the context of for-profit virtual care.

Phone zap for safe schools

When: Wednesday, August 31st, 5:30pm

We are in our third year of the pandemic and the provincial government still has not taken adequate measures to keep kids safe in school. Keeping schools open and stable means legislating 10 paid sick days for all workers, including parents, teachers, and education support staff; ensuring smaller class sizes; and providing adequate public funding so that schools can be healthy and safe.

Join us for this urgent phone action as we call our representatives to demand urgent action to keep schools open, safe, and healthy!

Statements of Solidarity with Walden Bello

On Monday, 8 August 2022, Dr. Walden Bello was arrested on two counts of libel and cyber libel filed by a former staff of Vice President Sara Duterte over statements made by Bello during the electoral campaign. Bello ran as a candidate for the vice-presidency, for the Partido Lakas ng Masa (Party of the Laboring Masses), in opposition to the right-wing ticket. The following set of statements were put out at the time of Walden’s arrest and over the last week. The harassment and charges are raising more general fears of persecution of progressive forces in the Philippines with the return of a member of the Marcos family to the presidency under the leadership of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and the banner of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (Federal Party of the Philippines).

The Ontario Government’s Plans for Healthcare Privatization and Seniors

By Ontario Health Coalition

The Ontario Conservative government of Doug Ford released what it called a five-point healthcare plan this morning in a press conference. In summary: – On COVID-19 there was nothing new. – On the unprecedented staffing crisis in Ontario’s hospitals, long-term care and home care, there was another in a long string of reannouncements of plans to bring in thousands of new staff in a series of ad hoc measures, similar to what we have heard before. The government remains intransigent on revoking Bill 124. There remains no plan that is anywhere near sufficient nor urgent enough to deal with the staffing crisis.

Toward a Public Pathway to Energy Transition

On Wednesday, July 27th, 2022, representatives of unions and social movements met in Johannesburg to discuss the country’s energy crisis.
