Tell Toronto School Board Trustees: Put an END to anti-Palestinian racism in our schools

The TDSB has failed to meet its own stated commitments to equity, decolonization, and human rights by allowing anti-Palestinian racism at a time when Palestinians are experiencing a genocide at the hands of the Israeli state. At least 14,000 children have been killed in Gaza and 90 percent of schools there have been damaged or destroyed. No child in Gaza has been in school since October 2023. The United Nations has called Gaza a “graveyard for children.”

But Canada’s largest school board has been utterly silent on this suffering. Worse, students have been sanctioned and intimidated for simply wearing the keffiyeh or clothing with the words ‘Free Palestine’.

Instead of support and care, the TDSB has refused to publish student writing that discusses Palestinian history and struggle in school newspapers.

The Anti-War Left Makes Inroads in Israel

Omdim be’Yachad-Naqef Ma’an, or Standing Together, is a Jewish-Arab social movement in Israel that organises against racism and occupation, and for equality and social justice. Federico Fuentes interviewed Standing Together’s national field organiser, Uri Weltmann, to discuss the growing peace movement inside Israel, how activists are confronting far-right extremists seeking to disrupt humanitarian aid going to the Gaza Strip, and the left’s recent electoral breakthroughs.

Framing Palestine

Over the last seven months, Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza has generated an unprecedented wave of global protest and awareness around Palestine. Many millions of people have taken to the streets, encampments have spread across universities throughout the world, courageous activists have blocked ports and arms factories, and there is a deep-seated recognition that a global campaign of boycott, divestment, and sanctions against Israel is needed now more than ever. The strength of these popular movements has been reinforced through the enormous attention brought by South Africa’s case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Break the Silence, Free Congo

There are deadly links between war, the plunder of resources, and climate breakdown. Blood red stains follow their concurrence across the map from Iraq, to Amazonia, to Gaza – no inhabited continent is unmarked. And nowhere are these links more devastatingly clear than in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where M23 militias financed by the Rwandan government, which is in turn funded by the EU, UK, USA, and others, are committing mass murder and ecological destruction.

Health and Safety director

The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) represents 54 unions and one million workers and is Canada’s largest provincial labour federation. The OFL is seeking an Interim Director of Health, Safety & Environment (Leave), directing policy and action in a provincial organization committed to social and economic justice. The successful candidate will begin in July 2024, and report to the President of the OFL, through the OFL’s Executive Director.

Full-time, 6-month contract to cover a maternity leave, working out of the Federation of Labour office in North York, Toronto. The successful candidate is covered under the COPE 343 Collective Agreement, with a competitive weekly salary, including COLA plus benefits.

Communications and Political Action

The Canadian National Office of the United Steelworkers (USW) is seeking to hire a full-time staff person, to work in our Etobicoke office as part of our Communications and Political Action Department, starting as of late July.

The United Steelworkers union works to develop every aspect of our communications with our members, government decision makers, the media and the general public. We are therefore looking for someone who is trained and experienced in current communication methods and who has media experience, political knowledge and a strong grounding in writing, editing and digital media.
