Save the Science Centre

We need your help to send a message that Ontarians care about the Ontario Science Centre. Send a message to the Premier, provincial Ministers of Infrastructure and Tourism, Members of Provincial Parliament, and the City of Toronto’s Mayor and City Councillors today.

Demand that proper investments are made in the Ontario Science Centre so that it continues to be a world class educational institution that Ontarians can be proud of and enjoy for decades to come.

Day of Action for FULL Rent Control

When: July 11th

Ontario ACORN members are organizing local actions in 5 cities across the province in protest of Above-Guideline-Increases in rent (AGIs), renovictions and skyrocketing rents. ACORN is demanding the Ontario Government protect affordable housing, and stop placating for-profit corporate developers and their desire for maximum profits.

ACORN is calling on the Province to:
1. Expand Rent Control to ALL buildings, not just those built prior to 2018
2. Introduce Vacancy Control to stop exorbitant rent increases between tenants
3. Ban AGIs

LCBO Workers on Historic Strike

The LCBO generates $2.5-billion annually, funding vital sectors like healthcare, education, and public transit. However, with the push to hand over the alcohol market to grocery and convenience store chains like Loblaws and Circle K, we’re seeing a dangerous diversion of public revenue into corporate profits. This shift not only jeopardizes public funds but also threatens to cut jobs and drive down wages and working conditions for LCBO employees.

The ongoing strike by LCBO workers is a crucial stand against these detrimental changes. Their fight is not just about fair wages and decent working conditions; it’s about ensuring that these essential jobs remain for future generations and that we continue to have the necessary funds for our public services.

Advocating for Healthcare for All

It has been just over a year since the Ontario government cut access to healthcare for migrants.

Since then, we have been sending emails and letters to the Premier and the Minister of Health to demand healthcare for all, regardless of immigration status.

Water, Climate, Violence

Weather whiplashing, unprecedented heat waves, drought, and forest fires, are in the news. Storytelling may begin in the middle of an action such as in John Milton’s poem “Paradise Lost,” in media res (into the middle of things), as in common reporting about climate change. In this essay I will focus on what is often left out and try to resuscitate some of the beginnings of the story about water and climate change, especially the siloed, intermeshed systems that Nigerian scholar Achille Mbembe calls “necropolitics.”

Whose Side is the Law Always On?

The University of Toronto won an injunction from the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (on Tuesday July 2nd) which requires pro-Palestine demonstrators to take down the physical structures they erected on campus (by 6:00 p.m., July 3rd), and in which they have camped since early May. The decision is a narrow one. It requires the dismantling of tents and other barriers to movement. It does not require the protestors to stop their protests on campus, unless they occur during the night (from 11 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.). In the end, the judge balanced the rights of the owner of the land against the rights of non-owners to use that land to protest.

Myanmar: The Coup, Resistance, and Global Solidarity

Three years ago, on February 1, 2021, the Myanmar military staged a coup, ending nearly a decade of civilian rule, arresting countless numbers in a brutal crackdown on popular protest. The military used the unrestrained power of the army to intensify an ongoing genocidal war against the Rohingya – a Muslim minority living within a predominately Buddhist society – forcing hundreds of thousands into exile and refugee camps in Bangladesh.
