Call on YorkU to Bargain in Good Faith

York University Faculty Association representing approximately 1,650 faculty, librarians, archivists, and post-doctoral visitors at York University has recently been bargaining with the Employer, York University, to renew its Collective Agreement. York Administration has unfortunately applied the same tactics they used against other labour unions and student unions at York University over the last seven years — Adopting false narratives about York’s financial situation, misinforming the community about the unions’ proposals, and threatening and endorsing police violence against the employees and students!

We call on the York University administration to stop its aggressive moves, bargain in good faith with YUFA and move rapidly toward settlement, respect students and workers, and stop pushing on a pay freeze and restructuring!

Stop the Toronto Air Show!

Every Labour Day weekend, Toronto is subjected to the Canadian International Air Show (also known as the Toronto Air Show), a blatant advertisement for militarism, war, and violence. Unable to escape from the earsplitting roar of planes on low fly-bys, the air show re-traumatizes victims of war, pollutes our air, and disturbs millions of residents across the city.

Last week marked 300 days of Israel’s genocide on Gaza. A genocide that has seen a projected 186,000+ Palestinians killed, the complete destruction of the Gaza Strip, the imprisonment of thousands of Palestinians, and the inhumane siege of Gaza exacerbated.

This Saturday, people from all across Canada will be making their way to the National March on Ottawa for our “300+ DAYS OF RAGE” rally to demand an end to Canadian complicity with Israel.

Drawing on the examples provided by a wide range of struggles, the course will look at how working class and popular struggles have won important victories. It will also consider, however, the strategies that have been used by those in power to contain and demobilize social resistance. Finally, it will explore the approaches that are needed today to fight back effectively in these volatile and uncertain times.

The Venezuelan People Stay with the Bolivarian Revolution

On July 28, the 70th birthday of Hugo Chávez (1954-2013), Nicolás Maduro Moros won the Venezuelan presidential election, the fifth since the Bolivarian Constitution was ratified in 1999. In January 2025, Maduro will start his third six-year term as president. He took over the reins of the Bolivarian Revolution after the death of Chávez from pelvic cancer in 2013. Since the death of Chávez, Maduro has faced several challenges: to build his own legitimacy as president in the place of a charismatic man who came to define the Bolivarian Revolution.

CBC and Its Normalization of Genocide

We have been told that Israel has killed more than 15,000 children in Gaza. But that figure does not square with reality. Jonathan Cook reports that “the death toll has been stuck at the same figure for weeks because most official institutions are wrecked … Save the Children says another 21,000 children are missing: dead under rubble, lost to their families, buried in unmarked graves, or kidnapped by Israeli troops and held in torture centres…” The Lancet’s recent study puts the death count at 186,000 – a dizzying figure, to put it mildly. And judging by Israel’s recent massacres, the death toll continues to rise at a precipitous rate.
