CALLS TO ACTION

Stand Up for Ontario

The provincial government must stand up for Ontario against American attacks on our economy by increasing our energy independence and lowering our demand for American fuel and technology.

We need to rapidly reduce the burning of imported American fracked gas and increase our made-in-Ontario supply of renewable energy while working with other provinces to strengthen the east-west grid.

We also need to tear up the expensive GE-Hitachi contract for unproven American-designed reactors and the enriched uranium needed to fuel them that will also be imported from the U.S.

Canada-US Trade War: A Reality Check

By Paramjit Singh

In the very first month of his second term, US President-elect, Donald Trump unleashed American imperialism by openly expressing his desire to bring Canada, Greenland, the Panama Canal, and the Gaza Strip under the direct control of the US. Some see it simply as rhetoric to send a signal to the world about America’s economic and military strength. Others see it as a sign of the beginning of the decline of the global hegemony of American imperialism, arguing that such aggressive assertions of dominance often emerge when a great power perceives its global influence to be waning.

Open Letter to Kristalina Georgieva (IMF)

By Atilio A. Boron

The Argentine government has said that it is counting on a firm promise from the IMF to extend a new loan to this troubled country. It does not take a keen observer of the national reality to notice the triple purpose behind this alleged financial bail-out. First, it is needed to stabilize the fragile situation of the extravagant economic project of the extreme right government; second, it will be used to placate the increasingly disenchanted and angry local public opinion in view of the phenomenal collapse of the income of registered wage earners, informal workers, and retirees and pensioners, something that last Wednesday’s massive demonstration and the government’s fierce repression displayed forcefully.
