He holds a D.Phil in Economics from the University of Oxford, UK, and in 2012, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science (Economics) by SOAS, University of London. He has taught at the University of Cambridge, UK, and at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi, widely recognized as a leading center of critical scholarship. He is currently Professor Emeritus at JNU, having retired in 2010 from the Sukhamoy Chakravarty Chair that he held there. Between 2006 and 2011 he was the Vice-Chairman of the Planning Board of the southern state of Kerala in India.
